If you’re aged thirty or under, you probably don’t even think about the possibility that your lovely smooth skin will, at some point in your life, begin to show signs of age but, believe me, it will unless you start to take preventative measures early!

What Causes Facial Aging?

Facial skin aging is caused by all sorts of factors including exposure to the sun and wind, excessive alcohol intake, smoking and dehydration but basically, with age, the facial musculature reduces which causes sagging and wrinkles. Collagen production lessens, age spots can appear along with the appearance of small red veins and skin can become dry and rough.

All this sounds awful but any beauty advisor will tell you that you can prevent the effects of age on your skin if you start your anti-aging regime when you’re young enough.

Your Skin Type

Apart from Normal, there are four skin types:

Dry – can be rough and flaky
Oily – greasy with large pores
Combination – dry cheeks but oily T (forehead, nose and chin)
Sensitive – may react badly to makeup or other skincare products

Daily Routine

Cleanse – choose a cleanser or soap which suits your skin type and use it morning and/or evening. Rinse with warm (not hot) water and pat dry – don’t scrub. In general, skin only needs washing once a day and morning is probably best. Use a makeup remover or cleanser in the evening.
Tone – toning is ok for oily skin as it can help to close up the pores but other skin types will find toner quite drying.

Moisturise – Even if your skin is oily, moisturiser is a must. Again, choose for your skin type but whatever that is, a light, quickly absorbed moisturiser will be the most pleasant to use. Most daytime moisturisers contain sunscreen to SPF15 these days but if you have skin which is particularly sensitive to the sun, add a higher factor sunscreen to your daily anti-aging routine.

Weekly Routine

One day a week, as well as your normal beauty regime, exfoliate to get rid of dead skin and use a mask for deep-cleaning. Cleanse before exfoliating and moisturise after rinsing off the mask.

Once a Month

If you can possibly find the time and the money go to a professional beauty advisor for a facial. He or she will be able to tell from the state of your skin whether you’re using the right products and can make suggestions for improvements to your routine. On top of that, a facial is a lovely relaxing way to spend an hour or so.
